¿QUÉ ES LA ESCUARDILLA DEL SOL?
‘La Escuadrilla del Sol-Los aviadores finlandeses’ es una asociación que surgió en 1999, con el
propósito de formar una comunidad, principalmente de pilotos finlandeses jubilados. Todos tenemos
nuestra residencia en la Costa del Sol, en la que pasamos la totalidad o gran parte del año.
En la actualidad somos 83 miembros activos inscritos en ”la escuardilla”. Algunos pilotos todavía
vuelan regularmente, y uno es hasta capitán de Vueling en España! Tenemos también a 5 mujeres
pilotos en el club.
Nuestro requisito principal de admisión es que el futuro miembro de la asociación tiene o haya
tenido alguna vez licencia de vuelo aprobado por Autoridad Finlandesa de Aviación, o haya pasado
por el entrenamiento militar de piloto. La mayoría de nosotros hemos sido pilotos en las fuerzas aéreas
finlandesas, algunos de nosotros hemos sido comandantes en diversas líneas aéreas comerciales, y
entre nosotros también hay algunos pilotos privados.
Nuestro socio más veterano tiene 94 años (Heikki Nevaste), y está hoy en
día pasando su jubilación bien merecida en Finlandia. Nuestros socios más jovenes están por cumplir
los 50 años – y por supuesto todavía siguen volando, con algunos de nosotros ya mayores que todavía
lo siguen haciendo.
La Escuadrilla se reúne oficialmente el primer jueves de cada mes, salvo los meses de junio, julio,
agosto y septiembre, ya que la mayoría de nosotros pasamos el verano en Finlandia. Algunos de
nosotros también hemos decidido tener una reunión informal cada jueves. En estas reuniones informales
nuestras señoras esposas también son bienvenidas. En las reuniones mensuales, a parte de los
asuntos oficiales, tenemos presentaciones relacionadas con la aviación – y otros asuntos interesantes.
También hacemos excursiones a lugares interesantes: A lo largo de los años hemos visitado por
ejemplo el museo del Aire de Madrid, la base aérea de Murcia, el centro de entrenamiento de helicópteros
de Granada, Sevilla, Jerez, Huelva, Río Tinto etc. y hemos realizado varias rutas gastronómicas
por el sur de España.
El mayor proyecto de la Escuardilla del Sol ha sido, y es, ayudar el Museo Nacional de Aeropuertos
y Transporte Aéreo de Málaga restaurar y conservar su antiguo, antes casi abandonado Convair 440
Metropolitan. Esto lo entendemos como una manera de preservar la estrecha relación que los Finlandeses
han tenido con España en la promoción del turismo. La Costa del Sol ha recibido a decenas de
miles de finlandeses desde mediados de los años 50.
De hecho ¡el primer avión extranjero de una línea regular que aterrizó en 1959 en la recién inaugurada
pista de vuelo fue finlandés. En concreto un Convair 440 Metropolitan, perteneciente a la
aerolínea finlandesa KAR-AIR, con 48 turistas finlandeses a bordo!
Resumiendo: Somos un grupo activo de pilotos, casi todos ya mayores, quienes todavía disfrutan de
la alegría de volar y encontrarse con sus amigos con mismos intereses!

WHAT IS THE ESCUADRILLA DEL SOL?
The ”Escuadrilla del Sol - Los Aviadores Finlandeses” was established in 1999 here on the Costa del Sol. The purpose of this society is to serve as a fraternity of, mostly retired, Finnish pilots who either live here in southern Spain all year round or at least most of the year here under the sun!
There are currently 83 active members in our ”squadron” – a few pilots are still flying, one even here in Spain as a captain for Vueling! We also have 5 lady pilots in the club now!
The most important criteria in order to become a member is that the person has, or has had, a pilot’s license approved by the Finnish Aviation Authority, or has a military pilot training. Most of our members have been pilots in the Finnish Air Force. Many have also been pilots, captains or co-pilots, flying for various commercial airlines and some have been private pilots.
Our eldest member today is 94 years old (Heikki Nevaste). Our youngest members are currently just under 50 and still flying, of course, among a few of us older guys still ‘hanging around’ there!
We have a regular official monthly meeting of the Escuadrilla on the first Thursday of each month, except during June, July, August and September, since most of us Finns usually like to spend our summers in Finland. We also meet unofficially every Thursday at the same club for a lunch. This time also our spouses and friends are welcome. In our monthly meetings, along with official issues, we have also presentations on aviation related and other interesting topics.
We also arrange trips to various interesting places. During the years we have visited e.g. the Madrid Aviation and Naval museums, Murcia Air Force base, the Granada helicopter training center, Sevilla, Jerez, Huelva, Gibraltar, Rio Tinto etc. and have made several gastronomic trips in southern Spain.
The main project of the Escuadrilla del Sol has been, and still is, the project of helping the Malaga Aviation Museum to renovate and preserve their old, originally semi-derelict, Convair CV440 Metropolitan. In so doing we hope to preserve and honor the close relationship we Finns have with Spain in the realm of Andalucian tourism. The Finns have been coming here by tens of thousands since the mid-1950’s.
In fact, the first foreign airliner to land at the newly opened Malaga ”Pablo Ruiz Picasso” Airport on the 20th of November in 1959 was just like that airplane – Convair CV440 Metropolitan – operated by a Finnish airline Kar-Air with 48 Finnish tourists on board!
All in all: We are an active group of mostly elderly pilots, who still enjoy the fun of flying and meeting friends with mutual interests!
